The Healthiest Laboratory Award celebrates excellence in environmental stewardship and health promotion in both practice and policy. It recognizes APHL member laboratories demonstrating outstanding efforts to reduce their collective environmental impact and to promote health and wellness programs. Winning laboratories receive the option of choosing from a suite of laboratory-related prizes associated with environmental sustainability and health promotion.

In 2015 APHL recognized the State Hygienic Laboratory at the University of Iowa with the Healthiest Laboratory Award. The San Bernardino Public Health Laboratory was the runner-up, and the Katherine A. Kelley Public Health Laboratory an honorary mention.

Completing the Healthiest Laboratory Self-Assessment

The Healthiest Laboratory Initiative Self-Assessment Checklist was developed as an evaluation tool to assess environmental responsibility and healthy workplace practices within member laboratories. The measures were chosen based on their ability to improve the environment and personal health promotion within a laboratory plus  ease of implementation and a relatively low implementation cost. The self-assessment fields include three areas of focus: health promotion, environmental sustainability and policy implementation.

To be eligible to receive the Healthiest Lab Award, complete the Healthiest Laboratory Self-Assessment Checklist. Only one submission per laboratory is allowed.

Please send requests for a pdf version of the checklist or other questions to membership@aphl.org.

Healthiest Laboratory Award Selection Process

  • All APHL member laboratories are encouraged to complete the Healthiest Laboratory Self-Assessment Checklist. Note that laboratories are eligible to receive the award only once every three years.
  • Winners are chosen based solely on their scores on the checklist.

Background on the Healthiest Laboratory Initiative

APHL is committed to the advancement of environmental stewardship and health promotion in laboratory practice. Concern for lab oratories' environmental impact  and workforce wellness led to development of a vision for a “healthier” laboratory community.

In 2009,  APHL launched the Healthiest Laboratory Initiative (HLI) to promote, coordinate and optimize the availability of health and environmental resources for member institutions and to establish a culture of workforce health promotion and environmental responsibility within the public laboratory community. HLI laboratory candidates receive support through the HLI to self-evaluate and improve their health status.

Recipients of the Healthiest Laboratory Initiative Award are honored during the awards breakfast at the APHL Annual Meeting.
