APHL’s AIMS Platform (AIMS) provides cutting edge data management and messaging services to the public health community and its data exchange partners. Founded over eight years ago as a routing service for encrypted messages to CDC, AIMS has evolved into the pre-eminent public health platform with assistance from CDC, FDA, USDA, EPA, ONC and others. The platform supports meaningful use compliant, data transformation services utilizing NIST “Certified Technology” on an Amazon Web Services core infrastructure. Its robust capacity allows for exchange of large volumes of bioinformatics and whole genome sequencing data, as well as support for national disease surveillance.

By the end of 2015, AIMS had over 50 messaging partners and was handling over 20,000 messages per month.

Cloud-Based Environment

AIMS’ secure, cloud-based environment provides shared services to aid in the transport, validation, translation and routing of electronic data. Public health laboratories and agencies at all levels of government, federal agencies, health care providers, hospitals, first responders and others rely on AIMS technology, infrastructure and services for critical public health initiatives such as:

  • Messaging services for the Public Health Community Platform
  • Messaging services for the Laboratory Response Network
  • Hosting for electronic initial case reporting to public health
  • Delivery of aggregated influenza surveillance data to CDC

Multiple Formats

AIMS supports Meaningful Use compliant data transformation services utilizing NIST “Certified Technology.” Supported formats include:

  • HL7 (Health Level 7)
  • Version 2.5
  • Version 2.3
  • Other versions
  • CSV (Comma Separated Values)
  • FHIR
  • IHE (Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise)

Multiple Forms

AIMS provides technology and services to support form manager, form requester, form filler and URI/URL form completion activities compliant with Structured Data Capture standards from both IHE and FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources).

Security

APHL Informatics staff schedule security audits and “white hat” penetration tests on a regular basis to ensure continued compliance with ever evolving standards.

Translation Services

AIMS offers translation services to facilitate data exchange between partners utilizing varying transport standards. These include:
  • PHINMS
  • VPN
  • Web Services
  • Direct Trust
  • SFTP

Broad Implementation Methodologies

AIMS supports broad implementation methodologies to meet customers’ needs. Current deployment services include Infrastructure as a Service (IAAS), Platform as a Service (PAAS) and Software as a Service (SAAS) models.
