APHL offers assessment and review opportunities for newborn screening programs. These include:

Molecular Assessment Program Site Visits

CDC’s Newborn Screening and Molecular Biology Branch, in cooperation with APHL, offers onsite visits designed to assess the quality of a state newborn screening molecular program. The visits are tailored to the specific needs of the newborn screening program with guidance in evaluating ongoing or soon-to-be implemented molecular testing procedures. The team of CDC and state public health laboratory scientists work with laboratory personnel to assess all molecular testing procedures.

NewSTEPs Site Review Visits

NewSTEPs offers non-regulatory site review visits aimed at assessing various components of a newborn screening program, including the laboratory system, birth facilities and follow-up system for quality improvement. The comprehensive site review visit is facilitated by a team of experts who customize the evaluation to the program, assessing state legislation and policy, ethics, funding models, organizational structure, point of care testing, education and more. The program receives a written report and recommendations following the assessment.

Site reviews are scheduled regularly. Request a site visit or review the evaluation tool.
